The February 2024 Cyberattack

  • What was the Change Healthcare cyberattack in 2024?
On February 21, 2014, Change Healthcare was targeted by a cyberattack launched by the ransomware group called ALPHV/BlackCat. The cyberattack successfully allowed the perpetrators to access sensitive data, including financial data. Change Healthcare is a healthcare payment processing company and a subsidiary of UnitedHealth, so in reaction to the attack, it halted all payment processing for healthcare providers that use its system.
  • How did the cyberattack impact healthcare providers and medical groups?
Any healthcare provider, medical group, or clinic within UnitedHealth was likely impacted by the Change Healthcare cyberattack in February 2024; millions of Americans who get their healthcare from UnitedHealth were also affected because their medical and financial data were accessible to the hackers. Change Healthcare processes about 50% of all the medical claims in the country, so the number of impacted parties is truly monumental. Furthermore, when Change Healthcare halted its payment processing in response to the cyberattack, it completely disrupted the cash flow to thousands of medical providers across the nation, putting them at risk of undue financial burdens.
  • What can you do if you were impacted by the Change Healthcare cyberattack?
Fulmer Sill is currently hearing from medical practices that were impacted by the Change Healthcare cyberattack and data breach. We can check to see if you are eligible to participate in a class action lawsuit that aims to recover damages related to cash flow interruption that left medical businesses in difficult financial situations.

Who Can Join a Class Action Against Change Healthcare?

We are currently looking to represent healthcare professionals and practices that meet these criteria:

  • Physicians, dentists, pharmacists, and clinics that bill medical insurance
  • Medical providers who are not associated with large hospital systems or groups
  • Small or independent clinics, medical plazas, dental practices, and locally-owned pharmacies
  • Medical providers in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and other cities across the state
  • Medical providers in Texas, Kansas, Arkansas, and Missouri (for select cases)

Why Should Change Healthcare Be Liable for Damages?

Change Healthcare failed to secure its systems, which handled highly sensitive financial information, and failed to protect it from the illegal actions of hackers. When a cyberattack occurred in February 2021, its response was to freeze its systems to limit the scope of the intrusion, but this also froze the cash flow system that thousands of healthcare businesses needed to keep their doors open.

Small and independent medical practices were particularly harmed by the full-scale cash flow freeze; many have reported that Change Healthcare’s offer for temporary funding assistance was inadequate, so they had to use loans, deferred salaries, and layoffs, or close their doors entirely.
The class action lawsuit aims to secure compensation for medical practitioners who were financially harmed – and possibly even shuttered – due to Change Healthcare’s failure to protect its systems, as well as its inadequate response to the cyberattack.
