Did You Suffer Serious Side Effects After Using Voxelotor?

Have you used Oxbryta (voxelotor) to treat sickle cell disease and suffered serious health problems after? Your injuries might be directly caused by Oxbryta, which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and its manufacturer, Pfizer, have flagged for recall. Oxbryta Recalled for Vaso-Occlusive Crisis Risks

In September 2024, the FDA and Pfizer announced that all lots of Oxbryta would be recalled. The primary reason for the recall is the strongly suspected link between the medication and a significantly increased risk of vaso-occlusive crisis, which can sometimes cause fatal complications. In light of the recall, doctors were told to stop prescribing Oxbryta to new patients, and anyone taking Oxbryta was advised to talk to their doctors about finding an alternative medication as soon as possible.

Dangers of Using Oxbryta

Oxbryta is primarily used to treat or minimize certain symptoms of sickle cell disease and sickle cell anemia. As important as it is to treat sickle cell disease and anemia, the FDA has determined that the benefits of Oxbryta do not outweigh its risks. Specifically, the risk of VOC is too high considering how dangerous this health complication can be.

Common symptoms of vaso-occlusive crisis include:

  • High or persistent fever
  • Chronic pain
  • Swelling
  • Kidney failure
  • Stroke
  • Death

The FDA determined that 1-in-20 Oxbryta users reported some sort of serious side effects. However, the actual rate is believed to be higher due to the likelihood that many cases of serious side effects and deaths were not correctly linked to Oxbryta use or reported to the FDA.

What Should You Do If You Used Oxbryta?

If you used Oxbryta and experienced an unsafe or serious side effect, you should:

  1. Talk to your doctor as soon as possible about changing medications if you have not already. It is not advised that you stop taking any prescription medication without first consulting a trusted medical expert.
  2. Get copies of your medical records that show when and why you were prescribed Oxbryta, as well as how many times you refilled your Oxbryta prescription.
  3. Call our Oxbryta lawsuit attorneys to learn if you have the grounds to file a lawsuit against Pfizer. Strict product liability laws might be enough to justify your claim or lawsuit against Pfizer for manufacturing and selling an unsafe medication.
