Lorsban Exposure Can Lead to Harm

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that exposure to Chlorpyrifos, the active ingredient used in the insecticide Lorsban, can lead to debilitating neurological damage and cognitive impairment for children up to five years old. For decades, the EPA acknowledged that Chlorpyrifos can cause acute poisoning, and in the early 2000s, prohibited its use in most home products. Despite the agency’s recognition of mounting evidence that prenatal exposure to the toxic chemical could have lasting effects on children’s brains, there still is no ban on the insecticide.

What is Lorsban?

Lorsban is the market name for Chlorpyrifos, an organophosphate insecticide patented in 1966 by Dow Chemical Company that is typically applied to crops and buildings. It quickly kills invasive insects by attacking the nervous system and penetrating the surrounding soil, providing long-term protection from common pests. According to the EPA, Chlorpyrifos is the “most used conventional insecticide” in the United States. More than one million pounds of Chlorpyrifos are sprayed on crops across the country every year. These crops include corn, soybeans, peaches, strawberries, apples, and walnuts.

Why is Lorsban Dangerous?

While Chlorpyrifos itself is not toxic, the way that the body breaks it down creates a toxic reaction. Adults may experience adverse short-term side effects following exposure, but children tend to be heavily affected long term due to their inability to break down the ingredient after exposure. Research conducted by the EPA has repeatedly concluded that exposure to Chlorpyrifos prenatally or up to five years old may be a direct cause of children’s neurological damage diagnoses.

Families living in agricultural communities are at risk even if they personally do not work in the fields. Frequent crop blow-over has exposed children in neighboring communities, resulting in extreme immediate reactions and less detectable cognitive conditions. We believe that children and their families in America’s farmland deserve better. Exposing the public to a pesticide that harms children is unacceptable.
